Disney’s Animal Kingdom provides many unexpected dining treasures. Besides Satu’li Canteen, Tiffins Restaurant, and Nomad Lounge, many small Disney’s Animal Kingdom kiosks serve surprisingly above-average food.
Flame Tree Barbecue offers guests several quick service dining options at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Also, this quick service location offers plenty of outdoor covered seating. You can enjoy your meal and embrace the views of the water nearby if you choose.
On our most recent visit, we elected to utilize the mobile order system. The app crashed during the process, but we could still look up our food order in the My Disney Experience mobile app to confirm our order. We pushed the button to have the cast members prepare our order and waited a few minutes for our sandwich.
Flame Tree Barbecue at Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich – $12.49
Our sandwich looked to have a decent amount of pork and slaw. We selected baked beans as a side, but we could have chosen fries instead. The menu description tells guests to expect a pulled pork sandwich topped with coleslaw and served with signature baked beans.
The sandwich and side come with two Ken’s barbecue sauce containers. That seemed like a substantial step down in terms of sauce compared to the better barbecue quick service options at Walt Disney World Resort, The Polite Pig, and Regal Eagle Smokehouse.
Initial Thoughts
Upon initial inspection, this sandwich offered some promise. The pork looked well prepared, and we enjoyed having several side options with this entrée. After a few bites, we gained more perspective about this sandwich. We understand why some guests say they order it during every visit to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Of course, this pulled pork sandwich comes from a quick service location, so some concerns should be raised before one orders it. Though we feel it’s a reasonable value, the sandwich and baked beans lack the flavor that barbecue fans will expect. We thought the sandwich tasted better after adding the barbecue sauce.
The sandwich uses slaw for texture, like many pulled pork sandwiches. We thought the slaw tasted average. This sandwich serves as a good example of Walt Disney World’s common trait in most dining options, with scaled-back flavor to appease most guests’ palates.
We thought the baked beans were a good choice to pair with the sandwich. These baked beans brought a merging of sweet and savory. Also, the sandwich offers the standard Walt Disney World bun, which struggles to support the sandwich’s contents.
Decent Value at Flame Tree Barbecue
Despite these potential weaknesses, this entrée presents guests with an above-average value compared to other BBQ quick service options. This sandwich can be messy, as you might expect at a barbecue place. Of course, that has to do with this sandwich’s biggest plus, the portion inside the buns. Though we were still hungry after eating this sandwich and side, most people will find this a filling lunch for your theme park adventure.
