Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that “Coco 2” is in development. While Pixar has not set an official release date, early reports suggest a 2029 debut.

According to Bob Iger, the popular “Coco” movie will get a sequel. He stated that the “Coco 2” would be released in 2029. However, Pixar has not confirmed that.
Disney has officially announced a sequel to Pixar’s 2017 animated hit “Coco.” CEO Bob Iger revealed the news during a shareholder meeting, confirming that the film is in its early stages. While no release date has been set, initial sourcing indicates a 2029 debut. The original creative team is returning for the sequel, which follows Pixar’s renewed focus on franchise films. “Coco” was a significant success, earning two Academy Awards and over $$800 million at the global box office. Walt Disney Company desires the same type of success with a sequel.
“While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
“Coco 2” Release Date

Pixar initially announced on social media that Coco 2 would be released in 2029. However, Pixar later removed any specific release date. A Disney press release also excluded any timeframe, leaving fans to speculate about when they can expect Miguel and his ancestors to return to the theatres. The “Coco” franchise continues to be popular, with a planned parade float for the new nighttime parade coming to Magic Kingdom this summer. There is also a show on the Disney Treasure.

The announcement of “Coco 2” occurs during a period when Pixar is placing more emphasis on sequels. Following several pandemic-era releases that debuted exclusively on Disney+, the animation powerhouse experienced a notable resurgence at the box office with “Inside Out 2” in 2024. This pattern of focusing on sequels fits Disney’s overall plan.
With Inside Out 2 proving that nostalgia works, Pixar looks to be relying on sequels. For example, “Toy Story 5” releases in theatre in 2026. Also, “Incredibles 3” is in development.
Sequel Strategy by Iger
During an earnings call last year, Iger defended this strategy, saying, “We’re leaning a little bit more into sequels and franchises. Given the environment, and given what it takes to get people out of their homes to see a film, leaning on franchises that are familiar is actually a smart thing.”
