The stories I get to be a page in. I have been invited into people’s core memories. I have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, engagements, weddings. I have mourned the loss of pets, friends, family members. I have been part of the last great adventure before chemotherapy starts, I have been part of the first great adventure after chemotherapy ends. I know I’m just serving their dinner, or mixing their cocktail, but these guests have allowed me to be a part of some of the most singularly definitive moments in their lives. It is a tremendous responsibility, and a tremendous honor. Then you get into the friendships. My best friend used to be my boss, now my kids call him “Uncle”. He is just one of the lifelong friendships that I have because of my employment with this company. I have been exposed to different cultures, different ideologies, different customs that I never would have encountered elsewhere. I see the world through a kaleidoscope of diverse viewpoints thanks to the relationships I have formed. I have friendships that span all walks of life, time zones, international borders. I’ve traveled with, gone to concerts with, gone to playoff games with, people that I’ve befriended through work.
