Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Future of Doctor Strange

Benedict Cumberbatch recently spoke with Variety. In that interview, he revealed some information about the future of Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch is currently promoting his new movie, “The Thing With Feathers.” Even though almost every detail of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) serves as a deep, dark secret, Cumberbatch revealed a little bit about his iconic character’s future. He said in the Variety interview that Doctor Strange is taking a hiatus in the next Marvel sequel, 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday.” Doctor Strange fans must wait for another movie to see former Sorcerer Supreme in action.

Cumberbatch shared that his role in the Marvel saga changed drastically over something beyond his control. When Jonathan Majors, who played Kang in the MCU, was fired in 2024 over accusations of abuse from his ex-girlfriend, that changed a significant piece of the Marvel plan. The Kang character stood as the main villain for the Marvel superheroes. That changed with the Kang character being eliminated from that status.

Doctor Strange’s absence from the “Avengers: Doomsday” film is due to the character not fitting in with the new storyline. However, Cumberbatch stated that Doctor Strange plays a significant role in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which will hit theaters in 2027.

“He’s quite central to where things might go,” Cumberbatch told Variety. He also hinted that Doctor Strange would be getting his own stand-alone movie in the future.

“They are very open to discussing where we go next,” Cumberbatch said. “Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving? He’s a very rich character to play. He’s a complex, contradictory, troubled human who’s got these extraordinary abilities, so there’s potent stuff to mess about with.”

In the Variety interview, we learned that Cumberbatch had no idea Robert Downey Jr. was returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Of course, this time, Downey plays the antagonist, not the hero, Iron Man. In fact, Cumberbatch admitted that he sent a few texts to Kevin Fiege when he found out with us all. Those texts may have included the three-word phrase starting with “What” and a curse word used only once in the Marvel movies so far.

Cumberbatch credited Downey with helping him become less rigid while working on Marvel movies. Observing Robert Downey Jr. and Holland banter in “Spider-Man: Homecoming” made Cumberbatch realize he should take a looser approach to being a superhero. “I learned a lot by seeing how at ease and improvisatory they are,” he says. “It’s hard because you have this huge apparatus around you, but it’s so important.”
